Getting to Galapagos

Travelers must arrive in Ecuador, there are no direct flights to Galapagos from any other international country, stay one night is the recommendation since all the local airlines operate two morning flights daily from Quito via Guayaquil to the Baltra airport and San Cristobal Island (two hours approx.) Some flights from Quito may have a stop in Guayaquil for about 35 minutes then keep on flying to their destination..

You can visit Ecuador – Galapagos without a visa for up to 90 days in any 12-month period if you are a citizen of most countries. However, you will need a visa if you want to stay longer, though there are some countries that need a visa to enter Ecuador please check it out in the following link to make sure.

Ecuador requires that all travelers entering the country have passports that are valid for up to six months post departure date.

It is highly recommended for international travelers to have health insurance; it has become mandatory for all travelers entering Ecuador since 2018. This insurance must be acquired in your country of residency prior to your departure.

The official currency of Ecuador is the United States dollar (USD), this was adopted in 2000, replacing the Sucre, because of the deep economic and political crises. it’s highly recommended to bring smaller bills, as change may sometimes be hard to come by especially in small towns, shops, local markets.

Hotels, restaurants, malls, supermarkets and some shops accept most to least commonly accepted are: Visa, MasterCard, Diners, American Express, and some restaurants, bars have plus 10 percent service charge.

Ecuador has more than 1,200 ATMs available, mostly in cities and towns you can get almost at any tourist area an ATM however there are few ATMs in the Galápagos. Be sure you know your daily withdrawal limit before you leave home.
Be aware that many banks impose a fee every time you use a card at another bank’s ATM and that fee can be higher for international transactions (up to $5 or more) than for domestic ones. In addition, the bank from which you withdraw cash may charge its own fee. For specific international withdrawal fees, consult your bank.

Best time to go to the Galapagos Islands

Being that the archipelago is located right along the equator, the Galapagos Islands are often mistakenly thought of as a tropical destination. Yes, the year-round temperatures are quite warm, however, the weather is not typical of the tropics. Understanding that there are two distinct seasons in the Galapagos is probably the best way to understand its climate. The two seasons in the Galapagos are hot and dry. Here are some key features of each:

Hot season

Rainy Season

(December through May)

Known as the warm or wet season, this is the perfect time to enjoy sunny days and occasional tropical showers that bring the islands to life.

  • 70s°F to upper 80s°F (21-31°C)
  • Higher precipitation and warmer temperatures.
  • Lush vegetation extending into the mostly arid highlands.
  • Daily, intermittent and refreshing rainfall.
  • Bright sunlight, vibrant colors, suffocating heat.
Dry season

Dry Season

(June through November)

Also referred to as the cool or misty season, this period is characterized by gentle mist, cooler days, and a tranquil climate that highlights the islands’ unique charm.

  • Mid-70s°F (21°C) to low 60s°F (16°C)
  • Humboldt Current strengthening.
  • Cooler water with choppier conditions
  • Very active marine life due to increased food supply.
  • Silver skies and very comfortable weather conditions.
